Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) Guide

Inspect field group schemas, read and update structured postmeta values, and manage custom options pages via MCP.

Overview

Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) is the standard for custom content structures in WordPress. More MCP provides native tools under the acf_* prefix to allow AI agents to understand your schema and update field values accurately.

Available Tools

More MCP provides 4 high-frequency ACF tools:

  • acf_get_field_groups: Discovers all active field groups and the post types or page templates they attach to.
  • acf_get_fields: Returns the field schema (names, keys, field types like repeater, gallery, select, true/false).
  • acf_get_post_values: Reads the resolved ACF values for a specific post or page ID.
  • acf_update_post_values: Updates single fields or repeater arrays using native ACF validation functions (update_field()).

Example Workflow

Instead of writing raw postmeta entries that fail to trigger ACF formatting filters:

  1. The AI calls acf_get_field_groups to discover what fields are assigned to your property custom post type.
  2. The AI inspects the schema to determine that property_price is a number and amenities is a multiselect array.
  3. The AI executes acf_update_post_values with formatted payloads that update both the raw postmeta and the ACF field key references (_field_key).

Support for ACF Pro

More MCP works with both ACF Free and ACF Pro, including Repeater fields, Flexible Content layouts, and Options pages.
